Casey arrived at the fourth floor of Stagg Studios, breathless and sweating. It was ten minutes to two, much to the annoyance of the young Latino woman behind the desk, who was clearly on a personal phone call.

“I’m here to read for the casting director,” Casey said, producing Lucas Morgan’s business card. “I’m with the Lucas Morgan Agency.”

“Name?” the girl cracked her gum, never taking the phone away from her ear.

“Casey Singer—I’m reading for the part of the hooker.”

The girl scanned the sign-in sheet and shrugged. “I don’t see your name here on the list . . . sorry. Plus, we are wrapping up for the day.”

Casey grabbed the girl’s phone and yanked it away from her ear. “Not on the list? I suggest that you take another look at this card,” she said, shoving it into the girl’s face. “See where today’s date is written in? That’s Mr. Morgan’s writing, and this puts me on your fucking list—or should we call him directly and maybe involve your boss in this misunderstanding?” She spoke into the girl’s iPhone directly. “She’ll have to call you back.” Then she disconnected the call and handed the device back to the girl. “Go ahead . . . call Mr. Morgan yourself. Tell him I’m not on the list.”

The girl’s mouth dropped. Silently, she peeled a label with the number forty-eight on it, wrote Casey’s name at the top, and attached it to two pages of script with a few lines of dialogue printed in faded ink. “Right through that door,” she said, waving a collection of acrylic nails.

“Thank you,” Casey huffed and walked across the empty waiting room. She would be the last, all right, but they always saved the best for last.
